چکیده
Monitoring System has been forthcoming (see March 1996 Colorado Dairy News). Although Colorado was not one of the states sampled. The results on a regional and national basis provide our producers with thoughtprovoking information. The Colorado Dairy News will feature topics from this study in this and future issues. We appreciate the assistance of Dr Scott Wells and his associates at NAHMS with these articles.

An Innovative Way to Treat Poultry Waste for Odor Control and Nitrogen Management
The effluent guidelines and standards for the feedlot category were first published in 1974 (1). The feedlot category includes beef, dairy, swine, poultry, horses, and sheep. The current regulations are based on a three tier structure and apply to all operations with ≥ 1,000 animal units (AUs) and some with ≥ 300 AUs , if they meet certain risk based conditions. In the case of the poultry indus...
متن کاملPathogen Reduction and Correlation to Factors Responsible for Pathogen Reduction in Dairy Farm Operations Treating Agricultural Waste
Approximately 350 million tons of manure is produced annually by agriculture in the U.S. Manure disposal at large concentrated animal feeding operations presents a challenge. Anaerobic digestion of livestock manure to reduce odor and produce biogas for energy generation is a profitable waste management option on farms, but out of reach of most farmers because of high capital costs. For operatio...
متن کاملBioconversion of dairy manure by black soldier fly (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) for biodiesel and sugar production.
Modern dairies cause the accumulation of considerable quantity of dairy manure which is a potential hazard to the environment. Dairy manure can also act as a principal larval resource for many insects such as the black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens. The black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) are considered as a new biotechnology to convert dairy manure into biodiesel and sugar. BSFL are a common colo...
متن کاملSeasonal ammonia emissions from a free-stall dairy in central Texas.
Studies show that agricultural and animal feeding operations (AFOs) contribute a considerable amount of ammonia (NH3) to the atmosphere. Agricultural NH3 emissions are recognized as an important air quality issue. Biological decomposition of manure from dairy operations results in emissions of NH3 and other gases. There is a need to determine NH3 emission factors (EFs) to compile annual NH3 inv...
متن کاملMethane and Manure: Feasibility Analysis of Price and Policy Alternatives
Anaerobic digestion has a number of benefits as a manure treatment technology, including greenhouse gas and odor reduction, increased nutrient availability, and reduced pathogen risk. There is also a potential for electricity generation and energy recovery, although this is only achieved at additional cost. The economic feasibility of the energy conversion technology varies significantly with s...
